Are you interested in studying abroad but you are worried whether your English is good enough?
Then come join the English Study Abroad Immersion Program!
What does “immersion” mean?
“Immersion” means going completely into something – in this case, English!
You will be in an environment where you will be surrounded by English-speakers and MUST use English!
So, what is the English Study Abroad Immersion Program?
This program is designed for students who would like to study abroad, but are worried whether they could survive there or not, especially because they are not confident in their English abilities.
In this program, students will use English in an authentic environment as if you were abroad, so you can gain confidence in your skills or motivation to improve your skills more.
There are 2 main parts:
First, we will go to British Hills in Fukushima (for more information, go to their website here) where you can experience British culture from inside Japan.
Of course, all the staff there will be speaking in English to make an authentic English environment, so you can experience what it would be like if you were in another country and test yourself.
Second, there will be a seminar about studying abroad with guest speakers from various countries.
In the seminar, you can learn about the environment in different countries, advice and tips about studying abroad, and be able to ask questions directly to the speakers to learn more.
**For this program, students must be able to participate in both the British Hills trip and the Study Abroad Seminar. However, it is possible to sign-up for the Study Abroad Seminar only.**
When is the program?
For the 2 main parts:
(1) British Hills trip – Tuesday 15 October 2024 (university holiday to celebrate the establishment of Yamagata University)
Time: 7:30AM – 8:00PM (we will take a bus from the university and will return to the university together; may finish earlier or later depending on traffic)
(2) Study Abroad Seminar – Friday 18 October 2024
Time: 5:30PM – 7:30PM
Place: International Lounge, Building 9, 1/F
**We may also have a meeting in October before the British Hills trip to go over the details and learn some useful English.
How much will it cost?
For students, you will only need to pay for the lunch at British Hills!
We will be having a buffet lunch, and it costs each person 1800 yen.
Other than that, the university will cover all other costs.
(But of course, you will need to pay with your own money if you buy anything or do extra activities not on the program during free time at British Hills.)
Who can join?
Any student at Yamagata University Faculty of Engineering can join!
However, there is a limit of 15 students for the British Hills trip.
The only requirements are:
- You must be able to attend the Study Abroad Seminar to join the British Hills trip.
- You have a recent TOEIC/ TOEIC-IP score of 500 points or more
- You have insurance (学研災)
If more than 15 students apply, priority will be given to Japanese students who have never been abroad before, and to students who want to study abroad.
**It is possible to attend the Study Abroad Seminar only, so please indicate this on the application form.**

How do I know if my application was successful?
We will contact students who get a place on the program by August with more information on what to do next.
**For students who do not receive any contact by August, it means your application was not successful – please understand that we cannot contact everyone who applied.
However, if one of the 15 students cannot join anymore, we may contact you to see if you are available to take their place. In this case, we will contact you by the end of the 1st semester.**
What should I do after I am accepted onto the program?
Once you have received contact, please pay the 1800 yen lunch money at the Student Support Center to confirm your space on the program by the end of the semester – Monday, 5 August.
